Cost-per-wear ratio (you know, the total cost of an item divided by the estimated number of days you’ll be wearing the item) dictates I need to rock this body-con Azzedine Alaïa frock 2,395,356 times to salvage my hard-earned loot.
But honestly, Alaïa, who is revered for curve-hugging clothes (so tight-fitting that catwalk models have to be squeezed into them by the designer’s assistants!) and for stretch-fabric, second-skin styles with complex seams and snaking zippers is a genius. And I don’t refer to many individuals as genius, so that’s a major compliment.
In fact, Cher (Alicia Silverstone) in Clueless said it best when being robbed at gunpoint: “Oh no. You don’t understand. This is an Alaïa.“

Compliments to Clueless, the lesser known but hugely influential Azzedine Alaïa gained appreciation from a whole new generation. Because after having absolutely mastered tight, curve-embracing dresses in the ’80s, by the mid-90s he was more of an insider’s fave. So you can thank Cher’s assailant for the introduction to the King of Cling among other things.
