Buried Diamond

I’m blessed to be a contingent of the Greek community. According to mama and baba, olive oil runs through my veins and for multitudinous reasons, I’m “special” because Plato, Diogenes, Alexander the Great, Sophocles, Pythagoras, Aristotle, King Phillip, Apollo, Zeus, Achilles and Homer are all — you guessed it — my fellow Hellenic homeboys. To further Greek-ify me, the ‘rents sent me to Byzantine Bootcamp (also known as Greek School) every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. where I was taught how to write and speak in Greek — and how to merrily dance in a loop.

Being Greek also equates to this truth: I’m the most superstitious soul you’ll ever meet compliments of mama’s perpetual obsessing over the ominous evil eye. “Be weary of excessive compliments! Spit whenever someone tells you you look pretty! Wear your underwear inside out. Always sleep with your closet door shut, ” she would insist day after day in an effort to ward off bad juju — and any toxic friend’s energy.

So you’ll never spot me without an evil eye fastened around my neck or wrist. Photographed above are some of the freshest evil eyes I’ve unearthed to date (and trust me, I’m always on the prowl) — in fact, the leather cuff was a fortuitous gift from a Musician/Artist/Leather Worker named Linny Kenney from New Hampshire. Thank you so much, Linny. This Greek sends good karma your way!

Mariella: You’re mama is a genius. I wore one in my wedding dress, too. I blame Johnny Walker for all the bad stuff that happened that night — namely my blackout.
